Top 3 Day Trips from Christchurch

A vibrant city that is ever-changing, Christchurch boasts of an epic rebuild and remodel, the likes of which has never been seen before. The town has some of the best scenic spots, like the stunning Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park. On the other hand, narrow streets hide art projects and small gardens, while old stone buildings stand proud alongside the sharp edges of the new buildings. There’s plenty to see and do around, and if you hop into a car rental in Christchurch. Here are some day trips you can take when you cannot afford the time for a long vacation:

Soak in Hanmer Springs

Less than two hours via road from Christchurch, Hanmer Springs is a lot like the perfect European spa holiday – a view of the mountains and crisp, clean air with hot springs all around. Hanmer Springs is a popular tourist destination as well, with close to half a million visitors visiting it in a year’s time. Despite the seasonal crowds, a visit is still highly recommended, especially since Hanmer Springs has now come to be known as a landmark. Starting out as a humble bathing pool in the 1850s, today, it has hot pools, sulphur pools, private saunas, waterslides, and much more to keep its visitors engaged during their vacations.

Dive into Waiau River

However, if you aren’t the type who seeks tranquillity and peace during a vacation, and need something to get your adrenaline pumping through your veins, then head over to Waiau River, which is located just over an hour north of Christchurch. You could go for bungee jumping off a bridge just over the frothing river here. But, if free-falling headfirst into a river isn’t your cup of tea, then there’s rafting, canoeing, paintball, and other adventure activities as well.

Whale Watch in Kaikoura

Located two and a half hours from Christchurch, Kaikoura, a seaside town, is known all over New Zealand for its marine life, which includes, most famously, whales. While the usual sightings are of sperm whales, one could see humpback whales, pilot whales, blue whales, southern right whales and orcas here as well, depending on the season. There are also dolphins, fur seals, and a variety of sea birds to see. Visitors can take their pick of transport from which they can spot this vast wildlife, including helicopters, boats, and even planes.
