Why do you need health insurance?

For many people, it can be challenging to accept the importance of health insurance. After all, this is something that can cost a lot of money each month, and (if all goes to plan), may not even be used.

If you’re one of the people who are uninsured or underinsured, this article is for you. Did you know that those who are uninsured receive less timely care, and less medical care overall compared to those who have insurance? They also have worse health outcomes, and this lack of insurance means that in the event that they need access to healthcare, this could be a huge fiscal burden for both them and their families.

In many countries, the healthcare systems are a mess. People are paying thousands of dollars for access to medications and basic services, and if you’re not insured and need emergency treatment, you may end up in debt for the rest of your life as a result. Health insurance protects you from these high (and sometimes unexpected) medical costs, and you’ll pay less for healthcare that’s in-network, even before meeting your deductible.

Another big reason to ensure that you have health insurance, is because you’ll usually get some free preventative care, such as check-ups, screenings, and vaccines, even before you’ve met your deductible.

Did you know that there are now new Health Insurance Marketplaces in every state throughout the United States? That means that you can take advantage of one-stop shops, and enjoy health insurance covering small employers, families, and individuals.

For those who are legally in the United States and are not incarcerated, they’re eligible to get this insurance through the Marketplace in their state. More good news? Insurance companies can’t deny coverage to those with pre-existing medical conditions or even charge higher premiums for people who have different health statuses.

One of the biggest barriers for people who need health insurance, is the sometimes overwhelming cost of coverage. However, most people who are uninsured will actually qualify for financial assistance in the form of a Health Insurance Premium Tax Credit, which allows you to have more affordable insurance premiums. The amount of assistance you’ll receive is dependent on your family size and income, and people who have low incomes can qualify for very low or free premiums.

All of the health plans that are sold through the Marketplace are also offered through private insurance companies and they must meet the minimum requirements. These include benefits like doctors’ visits, hospital care, prescription drugs, preventative care, emergency care, rehabilitative services and lab services.

If you need coverage, you just need to fill out one application to see the type of financial assistance you’re eligible. Once you have health insurance, you can go to the doctor for prevention and ensure you have the care needed to prevent serious illnesses and stay healthy. You’ll also be treated sooner if you or your family is sick, and avoid the worsening of the condition.
