The benefits of becoming a driving instructor

Becoming a driving instructor is a great career path for so many reasons. Arguably one of the most flexible job roles on offer, choosing to train as a driving instructor could open up a whole new avenue in your professional life and lead you into a wide range of possibilities.

If this is something that you’ve found yourself considering, but you need that extra push to take the plunge, then not to worry as we’ve got you covered. Read on as we take you through the best parts of starting a career as a driving instructor.

Benefit #1: Be your own boss

For a lot of people, being your own boss is the ultimate goal. You march to the beat of your own drum and have the final decision of when, where and how much you work. By becoming a driving instructor, you will find a newfound freedom in the way that you work. You’ll only have to take on students that you want to teach, allowing you to frame your work around the rest of your life – and not the other way round!

Benefit #2: Choose your own hours

Similar to the above point, working for yourself means choosing your own hours. As a driving instructor, you get to liaise with your students directly and figure out a time that works for the both of you. To gain a good reputation, it’s good to remain flexible and willing to accommodate, within reason. It’s best to find a nice balance between working in a way that benefits both you and your students, especially when it comes to planning out your hours. Resources like Zutobi practice permit tests help the students prepare before even getting into a car with you.

Benefit #3: Unlimited time off

Depending on your financial needs, working as an instructor means that there are no restrictions on how much “holiday” time you can take. Whilst you won’t get paid for this time off, you won’t have to get approval or anything like that. If you are planning on taking some time off, it’s a good idea to give your students plenty of warning and try not to let is affect their learning experience.

Benefit #4: Meeting new people

Teaching people to drive is a sure-fire way to socialise and meet members of the public that would otherwise be a stranger. You never know, you may make a friend for life! If you like to have a laugh, and pride yourself on strong communication skills, then the social aspect of the job will be ideal for you. Just make sure you do some teaching, as well as nattering!

Benefit #5: Well paid (if you’re willing to work)

Whilst making your own hours and taking as much time off as you please are both appealing, if you want to make a substantial profit then you’ll need to put the work in. If you’re willing to devote your time to this craft then you could earn anywhere from £30-£40k a year! Just like any job, the more you work, the more you’ll end up earning. If you’re not looking to work a full week, try to work out how much per annum you’ll need to support your life style – then you’ll be able to figure out how much you need to work and perhaps how much to charge for each lesson.
