Are you getting the right amount of sleep?

Unless you’re very diligent when it comes to getting enough sleep, you could probably do with an additional few hours each night. Lack of quality sleep can have a profound impact on your physical, mental and emotional health, and if you don’t make going to bed on time a priority, you may experience serious health problems in the future. So are you getting the right amount of sleep? And if you’re sleeping enough, are you sleeping well?

What you need to consider

If you’re not getting enough good sleep, you need to make some changes. The first and easiest thing to change is your environment. You need comfortable bedding, darkness and a cool temperature. Just by getting these three conditions right, you will immediately notice a difference in your sleep.

For improved quality of sleep, try investing in some quality bedding and pillows to support and regulate your temperature. Wool bedding is your best choice for quality mattress toppers, quilts and pillows, as the material is breathable and odour resistant. Source yours from a quality provider like MiniJumbuk to ensure your bedding lasts for many seasons.

Lighting and Decor

Do a review of your blinds or curtains. Are they shielding light from outside? Are they getting a bit thread-bare? Is the room dark enough at night? Your curtains and blinds should block out as much light as possible. You may also want to consider moving any electrical devices out of your bedroom, as they often emit light that can disturb your sleep.

Once you’ve figured out the lighting, review the décor of your room. Muted tones are best for a comfortable sleep, so if your walls are fluoro pink, consider changing that. You might also want to review any decorations you have around the walls and replace anything that doesn’t have a calming effect on you.

Your body temperature drops slightly as you fall asleep. This means that in a hot room, your body will have to work harder to simply get to sleep, let alone stay asleep. To optimise sleep quality, you need to do all that you can to stay cool and comfortable. Air conditioning is effective, but if you don’t want to run an air conditioner all night long, a fan will work just as well.

Getting a good’s night sleep will make you more productive and improve your mood, allowing you to be happier and more energetic throughout the day. If you can resist the temptation to stay up past your bedtime, you’ll thank yourself when you wake up feeling refreshed in the morning
