Here’s why you should take your family to San Diego this year

There’s a reason why San Diego is such a popular destination for people of all ages. In fact, there are many reasons- from the weather to the food, the incredible beaches to the gorgeous scenery.

If you haven’t yet taken a family trip to San Diego, here are a few reasons why you should:

The food

Located on the Mexican border, it’s easy to see why San Diego has such good Mexican food. From California Burittos to fish tacos, a Mexican feast is a must if you’re visiting the city. Of course, you won’t just find Mexican food here. San Diego is a culinary powerhouse, with options from all over the world. Be sure to visit Little Italy for some of the best Italian food in the country.

The Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter encompasses sixteen blocks from Broadway to L street. The Victorian-style restaurants, shops, galleries, and theatres make this a great place for a night out. If you can get a babysitter, there are also plenty of bars and clubs to choose from. The Gaslamp Quarter is home to numerous events throughout the year, from Mardi Gras to the Rock and Roll marathon.

The Scenery

From the many beaches along the coast to the drive across to Coronado, San Diego will ensure you’re pulling out your phone to take pictures at every turn. Be sure to visit La Jolla, where you can watch the waves crashing against the rocks, and the seals lying in the sun. This is one good reason to hire a car in San Diego– it’s super spread out but you won’t want to miss out on the many incredible views across the city and surrounding region. A car will give you much more freedom, and you’ll see far more of the city than you would if you had to rely on public transport.

The Zoo

San Diego Zoo is famous for a reason- with close to 4,000 rare and endangered animals living and thriving here. Do yourself a favor and devote an entire day to the zoo- especially if your kids tend to ask for piggyback rides when they get tired. There are some great restaurants here for lunch, and if you visit in the summer, you can stay late into the evening. Be sure to check what shows and presentations will be happening when you visit so you don’t miss anything amazing.

The Midway Museum

The USS Midway is one of the top attractions in San Diego. This was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in American history and was home to more than 225,000 soldiers throughout its lifetime. There are more than 60 exhibits waiting to be explored, and you and the kids will love seeing more than 29 aircraft which were painstakingly restored.

While the audio guides are excellent, this can be difficult if you have kids. Luckily, there are plenty of volunteers which will give tours and talks throughout the museum. Some of them even called the aircraft carrier home at some stage during their careers. This is one of San Diego’s most popular attractions, so purchase your tickets in advance and arrive early so you can see some of the exhibits without all the crowds.

Exploring the coast

Sure, San Diego city is a lovely place to visit. But you’ll also find some of the best and most picturesque spots along the coast. This is why you should definitely rent a car and take a road trip through Del Mar, Encinitas, La Jolla, Solana Beach, and Carlsbad.
