Sports that will help you meet your fitness goals in 2016

We’ve only got a few months left of 2015, so you may be thinking about your New Years resolutions. Many people want to lose weight, get fit, and focus on their fitness and health next year, but for those who aren’t fans of the gym, you can still get a great workout in while having fun.

Here are some sports that will help you meet your fitness goals in 2016:

Running

Running is a great sport because you can do it anywhere. It’s a good option if you’re traveling as you can get in some exercise while exploring your new city, and it’s one of the best ways to improve your cardiovascular health fast.

If you haven’t run very often in the past, your best bet is to ensure you start slow, taking your time working up to running full time. Start with a walk, running for a minute every 30 or 45 seconds and increasing the amount you run each time.

It’s a good idea to invest in a heart rate monitor to help you keep track of how hard you’re working and meet your fitness goals, so check out the options at HART sport. Apps like Couch to 5k are a great way to build up your running if you’d like to compete in a race or fun run.

Basketball

If you always imagined life as a pro basketballer, and you’re a fan of team sports, basketball could be the sport for you in 2016. You’re likely to find a team that’s perfect for your skill level, and basketball is a great way to meet people and make new friends.

Boxing

Boxing is a favourite among models, as well as elite athletes. Not only is it great cardio, but you’ll tone your whole body, especially your arms and abs, while learning how to defend yourself and throw a mean punch. Boxing workouts are often combined with circuit training and exercise like jump rope, ensuring that your whole body gets a great workout and you see huge changes in a short amount of time.

Swimming

For people who are looking for non-contact sports which are easy on the joints, swimming is an excellent choice. This sport is one of the best ways to get in a cardiovascular workout, and many athletes use it while recovering from injuries so they can keep fit while ensuring they don’t do further damage. If the thought of running doesn’t interest you, head down to your closest public pool and see if they offer lessons if you’re a bit rusty and need to work on your form, or go for it and swim laps whenever you have some free time.

Cycling

Cycling is a wonderful sport because not only is it fun, good for your health (and waist line) but it can also help you save money, which is never a bad thing. Perhaps you can incorporate cycling into your daily routine, either alongside taking a train, or instead of driving to work. While there’s an initial investment when buying a bicycle, it will pay itself off in terms of your health and money saved on transportation. Leisure Lake Bikes have a nice range of bikes for great prices, so you have no excuse not to get out there and get riding.

Tennis

For those who want to work on their hand-eye coordination while still having fun and getting fit, tennis is a great sport. It gives you the chance to play with others without having to be part of a team, and you can easily get lessons to improve your serve.
