Whether you’re a seasoned off-roading veteran, or you’re just getting started, it’s important that you have the right gear. The riding gear you’ll need for off-roading is very different from the gear you’d need for regularly motorcycle riding. Luckily, we’ve got some of the best riding gear to consider:
Helmets
Any basic risk assessment of riding either off-road or regularly will lead you to the smart conclusion that a helmet is a must. You can find cheap motorcycle helmets online, and these days there really is no excuse not to be wearing a good helmet. While injuries to the rest of your body will heal, head injuries can be catastrophic, so it makes sense to prioritize this purchase. You should also consider getting a dirt bike carrier for your motorcycle or dirt bike so you can ensure that your ride stays safe while travelling.
There is a wide range of helmets available, just make sure you research and ensure you’ve got a well-reviewed, trustworthy helmet.
Eye protection
One of the most forgotten pieces of motorcycle apparel includes eye protection. This will obviously depend on what type of helmet you’ve chosen- some include visors while others will require separate goggles.
Just like helmets, eye protection is a must. If a loose stone flips up and hits your eye, you could end up losing your sight in that eye. There are myriads of options for eye protection, just make sure they’re comfortable, absorb sweat, and sit well.
Foot protection
Another piece of motorcycle protective gear to consider? Basic foot protection. Many off-roaders forget to add basic foot protection. Any boots you’re wearing either on or off-road should be designed specifically for that purchase. Wellies, ex-army boots, rigger boots, steel-toe boots, and work boots are all no-nos. Bike boots are designed with a strong sole, ankle protection, and have buckles, zips, or straps so you don’t risk a lace getting caught in your bike.
Body armour
If you’re only on the road, most bikers will just use a bike jacket. However, the moment you start off-roading, it’s a good idea to upgrade. It’s highly likely that you’ll fall off at some stage, and that fall will be far less painful if you’ve invested in protection. Look for something with spine, shoulder, and elbow protection. Elbows are particularly important, since a good hit here can end up costing you control and sensation in your hand. Knee protection is also important, so don’t overlook good knee pads so you can protect this vital joint. Not to mention, braces can help protect your ACL ligament.
