Tips for Buying a Great Camera

If you have decided to buy a new camera, you most likely want to make this a long-term, quality investment. How do you do it though? How do you make sure you buy a great camera for your budget? Here are some tips to help you make the best purchase possible:

Compact Cameras and Mirrorless Cameras

Compact cameras are probably among the most common ones (the compact, small cameras everyone takes with them on vacation). Mirrorless cameras are also quite common, but they are different than the compact ones in many respects. In general, mirrorless cameras are considered to be a fairly good deal (especially when compared to compacts): they tend to have better prices and they have larger sensors too. However, if you are concerned about size or about future investments you may have to make (in good quality canon lenses, for example), a compact camera may be a better choice for you. Interested in the best compact cameras? Mirrorless Cameras and dSLRs

dSLRs are very commonly considered to be “professional” cameras (although they do not necessarily have to be actually professional – many of them are for beginners and enthusiasts as well). In general, investing in a dSLR is a good idea especially if you want a good battery life and if you want a good startup too. Also, a dSLR will most likely be much better for those of you who want to capture photos in action.

At the same time though, if you are concerned by the size of a dSLR (they do tend to be quite large), if you want to shoot quality videos with your camera too and if you want your camera to support power zoom lenses as well, a mirrorless camera would be a good choice for you.

What Other Specifications to Look For?

Aside from the actual type of camera, you may want to look into other specifications too. Here are some of the most important ones:

1. Resolution (or how many megapixels the camera shoots with). In general, modern day cameras have more than enough megapixels for whatever type of photos you may want to shoot, so this is not a criterion that’s still taken into consideration these days.

2. Lenses. Alright, you could probably write entire books on lenses and how to pick them – and it would still not be enough to cover everything you should know about them. In general, you should look after two things: focal length and aperture. The focal length shows how magnified an image is and how much of the “scene” the photo will cover. Also, you should know that zoom lens are those which cover multiple focal lengths.

Furthermore, aperture is (put in simple terms), the camera’s opening that allows the light to get in. The wider the opening, the more light will get in and the sharper the objects surrounding the main subject in the photo will be. Also, when reading specs, keep in mind the fact that the lower the number is, the larger the aperture will be as well.

Aside from lenses and resolution, you should also take into consideration characteristics such as battery life, video, image stabilization, viewfinder, sensors (their size and their type), light sensitivity and so on.

Nobody can tell you what type of camera is best for you. However, if you keep yourself informed and if you do your research, you will definitely end up with a product that satisfies all of your needs. The important thing is to take all features into consideration, decide on what you would want to focus and not rush into making any purchase before you are as certain as possible that it is the right product for you.
